Please know from the beginning that some of the best information in indie publlishing comes from Amazon and from Smashwords., and Both will publish your e-books free. Play it wise and spend time studying, then going over and taking and saving notes on what you learn. Amazon employees are courteous and immensely helpful. Yo can access Help from the bottom or the top of most pages. Patience, patience, and more patience will be needed here. You know the old saw that Rome wasn’t built in a day. Please don’t expect to become a successful indie publisher in a month. It helps to prepare for the long haul.

More Useful Websites to Help you Succeed in Indie Publishing – Part 2

Whatever you do, please don’t let anyone else’s thinking replace yours. You’ve written your book(s) — quite an accomplishment. Now you want to get it in the hands of readers. Truly good editing and proofing are absolute necessities. Google or the word of a trusted friend who has used the editor and proofer will help. If Google, be sure to check for complaints and kudos for your choice. If it’s to be an e-book, you’ll need a specialist in this to save pulling out your hair.

The best people to prepare your edited and proofed manuscript for e-book publishing will do it for both Amazon and Smashwords for the same price. Again, work with Google on this. They have the formats, etc. I’ve known writers who do their own, but I can’t sweat it These two companies are premier in the field and give a world of support and publicity. Doing Your Best with the E-book Market

E-books are the fastest growing segment of the book market.  And self-published authors are fnding an audience of readers for their titles due to the low cost of setting up a title on an e-publishing website such as Amazon’s Kindle, Barnes and Noble’s Pubit, Apple’s itunes or Smashwords.

Self-publishing e-books isn’t expensive nor is it difficult.  All an author needs to create an e-book is Microsoft Word, some photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop Elements for their covers, an e-mail address and a bank account to deposit royalty payments in.  Most e-publishing websites such as Amazon or Pubit  will convert the Word Files to e-pub or Mobi, the two leading formats used by the markeetplace.

Getting Started with E-Books

E-books are taking over! That’s a factl In 2010 and 2011, two-thirds of books sold were e-books; only about a one-third were published by regular publishers, and that includes paperbacks. Now, e-books can either bring you joy and a neat little bit of money. Or they can cause you to pull out your last five strands of hair. But you’re the boss here, and  it all depends on how much or how little care and precision you put into it.

I would never presume to tell you more than just a little about this new phenomenon. I’ll leave it up to you to Google it, make friends with your librarian, check out blogs on e-books and buy and read lots of pertinent information in books, articles, and the like.

I’m going to start off giving you the names of two online publishing houses you need to contact now. They have a world of excellent info to offer and they’re where you’ll be selling most or just about all of your writing. The first is The second is The first, Amazon, you’re familiar with. Their Kindle has brought and bought e-books to life. Check in on them and study their prodigious free literature. Find out how to upload your books. (It ain’t easy, but it is possible). Google this, too, to find out where help is available to get you started.

When You Go To Market

Going Green

You’ll note my heading does not begin with the words self-publishing.  That’s because this blog is as much for writers being published by regular publishers.  If you’re not studying marketing and the ways it’s done nowadays, stop and wonder if you’re serious about what you’re doing.

The average self-published novel sells around 400 copies.  A listing on a mystery writing lineup featuring publishers who are open to mystery acquisitions states that they sell about 2,000 copies.  That was when the economy was neither booming nor sinking.  Think what it’s like today.

What I’m saying holds as true for self-publishers as for those published by regular publishers.  Today’s market needs a different approach.  First of all, you need first-rate books on how and where to sell.  Three I can think of that can be purchased on Amazon — used if need be — and are worth their weight in platinum are John Kremer’s sixth edition of his fabulous “1001 Ways To Market Your Books.”  From soup to nuts he lays out the ways and means of reaching the readers you want.  Another is Penny Sansevieri’s “Red Hot Internet Advertising.”  Still another is “Plug Your Book,” by Steve Weber.  Amazon’s website is

It’s so important to keep abreast of what’s going on in book marketing.  The internet has taken over.  Print is still important, but fading.  All three of these books set forth the steps you need to take to find and keep readers.  And isn’t that what you want most of all?
